Somebody else who thinks ‘Away In A Manger’ is heretical: Liverpool nativity. As the late Robert Webber used to say, the test of orthodoxy is the answer to the question, ‘Pinch Jesus and what does he say?’ The theologically correct answer is, ‘Ouch.’

Musically uninspired, theologically vapid and generally annoying, yes.
But heretical?

‘Little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes’: to my mind, that makes Jesus less than fully human. If so, we’re talking Docetism, and thus heresy. Or am I over-stating the case?

Nah, I just think it’s a case of lazy (lousy) lyric writing.
If we labelled every hymn with terrible lyrics as heretical, we’d be erasing great tracts of our hynmody. Which, now that I think of it isn’t an absolutely horrible idea. 🙂
Merry, Blessed Christmas (with a minimum of loud crying) to you and yours!
