Fourteen years as a minister and this morning is the first time I’ll have ever taken a primary school assembly!. Here are a couple of resources: this is a free site sponsored by SPCK, and Assemblies Online from Damaris requires a subscription.

How did I avoid them? Well in my first appointment (five years) I don’t recall ever being asked. In my second appointment (eight years) one of the ecumenical churches I served used to go into local schools. However I managed to ensure I was never on the rota. Partly this was because I’ve always found things like all age worship difficult (not that I in any way think it’s wrong, more that I’ve never felt I’ve had the gifts), and partly because the schools they worked with insisted on determining the themes of the assemblies, which just made it harder for someone like me. Here I’ve happened upon an Anglican primary school whose head teacher worships at the parish church we’re in covenant with, and who is happy for me to determine a theme. So I can dip my toes in the water and learn.
The assembly seemsed to go well. I had to adapt an idea from a book aimed at middle and secondary schools. I’m going to look at the websites mentioned above, and I’m also going into the Diocesan Resources Centre to hunt out some books.
