Presbyterian Global Fellowship

I hadn’t heard of the Presbyterian Global Fellowship until yesterday, when they contacted me and asked permission to reproduce my recent sermon on the Word made flesh. (I happily agreed, and they have posted it here, on their blog.) They look a fascinating group of people, promoting missional thinking and practice in American Presbyterian circles. Do have a look at how they are trying to do this in an historic ‘mainline’ denomination.

  1. Cool. Congratulations on becoming a world-famous blogger.

I was interested in your linking of the Examen with cell church. I belong to the Christian Life Community which is actually an Ignatian community for lay people.

We meet fortnightly for prayer and sharing. We do not, however, have discussions. Each person simply shares what God has been doing in his or her life and others may not discuss, debate or disagree. Thus it becomes a safe space for sharing.

It never really occured to me that this was like a cell group, but I guess it might be.

  2. Ooh, I rather doubt I am a world-famous blogger, Pam! I think it’s more likely I was found through a blog search, say, of Technorati (just as I suspect Brad Brisco who commented on the original posting of the sermon probably did).

As to linking the Examen and Cell Church, I was trying to say that both have a slant on spiritual growth that at best links them to real life rather than theory. Both if practised properly lead to the rubber hitting the road. But having said that I like the sound of your Christian Life Community, and I’ll check it out.

  3. I can give you more information about the format if you want. There are actually formal input sheets and I could scan one and email it to you. I expect that some people wouldn’t like the formality of the sheet, but we practice it quite loosely in my group. Also, although CLC intends to be ecumenical, it ‘feels’ quite Catholic to a Protestant – again, something that might put some people off. My group is 6 Catholics, me and two Anglicans.

It seems to me that the format could easily be imitated even without the input sheets.

  4. Pam,

Thank you – I’d love to see a copy of your sheet. I also had a quick look at the website. It’s very Jesuit, isn’t it? But perhaps that is inevitable for something with Ignatian roots. I also note the group is about more than the Examen, but Ignatian spirituality generally – have I got that right?

  5. Yes, it’s about Ignatian Spirituality in general and not just about the Examen. I’ve got a long history with Jesuits and Ignatian spirituality – hence, my interest.

CLC IS very Jesuit; in fact, my group meets at Manresa House in Birmingham. CLC is supposed to be a sort of ‘third order’ Ignatian community for lay people. (Obviously I’m a lay person in RC terms!)

    I’ll email you a sheet.
