For some strange reason, my superintendent minister’s church sends me its newsletter. In his lead article this month, Bernard is encouraging people not be despondent about Methodism. He says,
Methodism still remains the fastest growing single denomination in the world (Pentecostalism is faster but more defused).
Defused. I know he means ‘diffused’, but maybe that’s our problem as church. We’re defused. Not that I want to use military-type images, but it paints a picture.
And it ranks alongside some of my favourite church typos down the years. Perhaps the one I liked the most was in the 1980s, in an Anglican church that had typed out and duplicated the ASB Litany for use in prayers of intercession. One prayer should have read, ‘Lord, endue the High Court of Parliament and all ministers of the crown with wisdom.’ Unfortunately, they had typed, ‘Lord, endure the High Court of Parliament …’
