  1. Here are some books that I found helpful. I apologise that these all come from a US perspective, but I think they can still be helpful to UK readers.

As a simple benchmark, Jeff Van Vonderen calls a church spiritually abusive if disagreeing with the church leadership is not “allowed”.

Healing Spiritual Abuse by Ken Blue. ISBN: 0830816607 (http://tinyurl.com/zf43l)

The Subtle Power of Spiritual Abuse by David Johnson and Jeff Van Vonderen ISBN: 0764201379 (http://tinyurl.com/kqkp2)

Healing Spiritual Abuse and Religious Addiction by Matthew Linn ISBN: 0809134888 (http://tinyurl.com/mbx7l)

12 Christian Beliefs That Can Drive You Crazy by Henry Cloud & John Townsend. ISBN: 0310494915 (http://tinyurl.com/je8pr)

Domestic Violence: What Every Pastor Needs to Know by Al Miles ISBN: 0800631757 (http://tinyurl.com/gbc7f)

I realise that the book on Domestic Violence is a bit of a cross-over, but in reading this book, it becomes obvious how churches may add spiritual abuse to an already dangerous situation. The key thing to know is that spouses who commit domestic abuse are almost always remorseful after an incident and the pattern of this additive illness is: violence, remorse, escalation of violence. By ordering the abused spouses to forgive when the perpetrator has not addressed his or her addiction to violence, churches can do real harm.
