Thanks, Tony, silly me, I should have thought of that. It just had the feeling of being premature last night, but I obviously operate on a Roman clock!

"I found the Easter Eve liturgy curious in one respect: already we were proclaiming ‘Alleluia, Christ is risen! He is risen indeed, alleluia!’ I had never uttered those words before Easter morning."

The point is that the Jewish chronology of the Gospel story marks the beginning and the end of the day at sunset. So, technically, Easter Sunday starts at sunset on Saturday. Jesus was raised at some point in the hours of darkness - no clue as to when. The Gospel narratives either have the tomb already opened (Mark, Luke, John) or being opened by angels (Matthew) not to let Jesus out, but to let the women in to see. So our Easter morning marks the discovery of the resurrection, not so much the event itself, since nobody saw that (whatever the Gospel of Peter might say!).

Easter Eve is actually the start of Easter Sunday (hence the kindling of new light). I wonder how many have taken that to be the permission to eat chocolate again...
